Regular cleanings are an essential element of your oral health care. At Value Dental Centers Tempe, we recommend our patients schedule their dental cleanings every six months at our office in Tempe, AZ. Cleanings are typically scheduled at the same time as your biannual dental exam for the most benefits. Regular cleanings eliminate plaque and tartar that build up between visits to maintain your oral health and prevent decay and gum disease.
Do I Really Need Biannual Cleanings?
Most of our patients do need biannual cleanings. Our family practice recommends patients of all ages receive a professional cleaning twice each year, even children. A child’s primary teeth are very susceptible to cavities. Frequent cavities in a child’s early years can lead to a cyclical pattern of cavities and other issues as an adult. In addition to regular cleanings, many children benefit from the added protection of dental sealants.
Our teenage, adult, and senior patients can also benefit greatly from regular cleanings. Not only do dental cleanings help prevent gum disease and decay, but they can also help in the removal of surface stains. Professional cleanings are good for your oral health and your appearance. Patients with restorations such as a bridge or partial denture should also receive regular cleanings to help protect the remaining natural teeth. If you suffer from chronic cavities or gum disease, more frequent cleanings may be necessary.
What Will Happen During My Dental Cleaning?
When scheduled together, your cleaning will be completed before your dental exam. One of our skilled dental hygienists will ask you about your oral care routine and will check for signs of decay and periodontitis before beginning your cleaning. Using state-of-the-art dental tools, he or she will remove tartar, food particles, and other debris from your teeth. Our prophylaxis paste, available in different flavors, is a gritty toothpaste used to polish the surface of your teeth. This removes any remaining plaque and bacteria from your teeth and creates a slick finish.
Your hygienist will floss your teeth and then you will receive a fluoride treatment. The fluoride is applied to your teeth in foam trays that will sit on your teeth for roughly 30 seconds. You will rinse your teeth and your hygienist can answer any questions you may have about caring for your teeth. Cleanings are typically completed in less than an hour and are usually followed by a dental exam.
Why Are Regular Cleanings Important?
Even the most diligent patients experience a buildup of plaque over time. Plaque typically builds up in places that are hard to reach with your toothbrush and floss. Regular cleanings removes this buildup to prevent gum disease and tooth decay. When plaque is not removed, gum disease and/or tooth decay may develop. If you put off treatment until these conditions are more advanced, your treatment will be more complex and more costly. In severe cases, we may not be able to save the tooth or teeth. This requires the extraction of the tooth and replacing it with a dental implant or crown.
Your oral health plays a significant role in the state of your overall health. Studies have linked gum disease to heart disease, stroke, diabetes, and dementia. Regular dental cleanings are as important to your oral health as they are to your overall health.
